How sustainable is the occupation of a museologist?

Museums are increasingly relying on multimedia and innovative means of communication. Whether people will flock to a museum is not only dependent on the topic presented, but also on whether it is presented in an exciting manner. This is the most important challenge of a museologist. If you can accomplish to mesmerize the visitor the profession has a promising future.

Are there permanent positions in museums?

Yes, there are permanent employment positions in museums, often in documentation departments (e.g. depots). Nevertheless positions can also be found in exhibition planning, education or PR.

Is the B.A. degree recognized within the German museum landscape?

Yes. The Bologna Accord enables your academic degree to be recognized in all of Europe.

Is it sensible to add a M.A. after the B.A. degree?

That depends solely on your personal objectives. You can do a lot with the B.A., but for an international career getting a M.A. is recommended. Here at HTW we offer the M.A. program ´Museum Management and Communication´. Of course many other M.A. programs that deepen knowledge in e.g. art history, archeology, archives or IT provide options as well.

What sets this B.A. program apart from similar study programs at other universities?

In the Museum Studies program at HTW theory and practice are very much intertwined. The applicability and the advancements made in this occupational area are given priority in our doctrine. Our cooperations with many of Berlin’s museums and cultural institutions are hereby formative.

How practically orientated is studying at HTW Berlin?

The practice projects in semesters 3 and 4 as well as the three-monthly internship give various possibilities to try out your acquired skills in a practical setting. The lecturers are also introducing their own professional practice into the learning environment.
